Deerly Beloved: We Do!

Our ceremony continued with the a declaration of intent to marry:

"Do you, Mr Elk take Miss Elk as an equal and as your wife, to support her, to treat her lovingly and with respect, in joy and in sorrow, in plenty and in want, in sickness and in health, and to be a faithful, committed partner, for all the days before you?

Do you, Miss Elk take Mr Elk as an equal and as your husband, to support him, to treat him lovingly and with respect, in joy and in sorrow, in plenty and in want, in sickness and in health, and to be a faithful, committed partner, for all the days before you?"

Mr Elk and I happily replied "I do!", and we were on to our vows.  I chose these particular vows because although they aren't personalized, they seemed very fitting.  Mr Elk was asked to repeat them after officiant J first.

"Miss Elk,, I choose you to be my wife. I promise from this day forward To be worthy of your trust and deserving of your confidence; To be generous with my time, my energy and my love; To have patience To return love, tolerance, and generosity to our family. To trust you; To be devoted to you and  to our life together. These things I pledge before you, myself, our friends, and our family."

Unfortunately, Mr Elk wasn't so great at the remembering his lines, which resulted in him asking numerous times for officiant J to repeat himself, and led me and most guests into a fit of giggles:

To return love, tolerance, and generosity to our family. To trust you; To be devoted to you and to our life together. These things I pledge before you, myself, our friends, and our family."

Photobucket Next, it was time for us to exchange rings.  This was truly a special moment, as we used Grandma and Grandpa Elks' original wedding bands:

"For thousands of years, lovers have exchanged rings as a token of their vows.  These particular rings have special significance, as they are the wedding bands of Grandma and Grandpa Elk.  Married for 64 years, their partnership is what Mr and Miss Elk will strive to attain as they move forward in their lives together.

Mr Elk, take Miss Elk's ring and place it on her finger and repeat after me:
I give you this ring as a sign that I choose you
To be my lover, my partner and my best friend, to the end of my days
Wear it, think of me, and know that I love you always

Our last major piece of the ceremony was the handfasting.  I had never really thought about how we would have our hands tied, so when the time came I whispered to officiant J to just lay the cords over our hands, as I was worried it would take too long for him to actually tie them.  Of note, there was a knot in the cords, so I didn't feel that the ceremony lost meaning without having a knot actually tied.

"Mr and Miss Elk, please take each other's hands

These are the hands of your best friend. They are holding yours on your wedding day as you have promised to love each other today, tomorrow and forever. These are the hands that will work alongside yours as together you build your future. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch will comfort. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes- tears of sorrow, and tears of joy. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. May these hands always reach out with love, tenderness and respect as you continue to grow together. As this knot has been tied over your hands, so will your lives now be bound together as one."

Now Mr Elk just had to break the glass

"And now that you have spoken the words, and performed the rites, which unite your lives, I declare your marriage to be valid and binding, and I pronounce you Mr and Mrs Elk to be husband and wife before your family and friends. I ask that you now break this glass"

Mr Elk was worried that he wouldn't break the glass, and then would never hear the end of it.  So he REALLY worked hard to make sure that glass broke!
